With many glazes
it is possible to get completely different color variations through creating an atmosphere of oxygen deprivation in the kiln.
This process is called reduction firing. In the case of crystalline glazes, reduction firing creates an inhospitable environment
for crystal development. For this reason reduction must be introduced as the temperature is cooling after the crystals are
formed, or later in a post fire reduction. This means re-firing the pieces to a temperature high enough for the carbon to
affect the coloring agent, such as copper or iron, but low enough not to alter the shape and definition of the crystals. The
pieces on this page have been reduced in this way, and as you'll see they are unlike the glaze colors on any other page of
my site, although they are the very same glazes.
